EUROPE BEFORE CLOSURE?
THE HASHTABLE

"We cannot now, no longer dismiss the idea, that the current leaders are actively sabotaging both the idea of the European Union and everything that has made this continent strong in past centuries.
And we can reasonably doubt that it is through voting that the European peoples will escape the destructive spiral in which these leaders have placed them."

EUROPE ON THE CROSS ROAD?

" Democracy is already not a given within the European Union. Anti-democratic parties are on the rise in many EU countries.
Even the best-intentioned plans can easily take on an unpleasant undemocratic smell to them. This opacity, this lack of democracy, undermines the legitimacy of European decision-making.
Moreover, while von der Leyen preaches the importance of “ethics, transparency and integrity”, it is by no means inconceivable that future generations of European politicians could increasingly squeeze the influence and funding of watchdogs just to get rid of those troublesome critics.
Democracy is already not a given within the European Union. Anti-democratic parties are on the rise in many EU countries. If they also gain a stronger foothold in the European Parliament and, with that, influence other parties, this doesn’t bode well for democratic control mechanisms at the European level.
That’s why it is important to uphold the democratic rule of law in Brussels in particular. Not only in theory but also in practice. This means that watchdogs like lawmakers, civil servants, civil society organisations and journalists must be allowed to do their job – and not be put on the leash of power like pampered lapdogs.
Who's Watching Brussels? - Lise Witteman
Why the EU Deserves Better Watchdogs
ABOUT THE BOOK
Hundreds of thousands of euros from alleged bribes stashed in a suitcase. Deleted text messages setting out deals worth billions of euros. There's no shortage of drama in the EU's unofficial capital.
How is this possible? And how do we keep 'Brussels' under control?
These are crucial questions for the fledgling democracy that is the European Union – especially now that leaders with little interest in democratic values are coming to power in a growing number of member states. And the gap between the average European citizens and Brussels’ bureaucracy is enormous.
Who are the watchdogs controlling the EU? And how can they counterbalance the hermetic power of Brussels?
In this book, investigative platform Follow the Money reveals how the watchdogs watched helplessly from their cage at crucial moments.
Who’s watching Brussels? is an impassioned plea for European supervision with sharp teeth.
