The Louvre may recover its stolen jewels, but Europe will never regain the credibility sacrificed when expropriation is presented as a form of justice.
By then, the architects and champions of this project – von der Leyen, Merz, Macron and Sanchez – will have left their posts, forcing their successors to justify why Europe's word no longer carries any weight and why the rules that once defined the Union collapsed as soon as they became inopportune.
