Dagon (Dagan) – the West Semitic god, the national god of the Philistines after their conquest of Canaan. It is mentioned in Akkadian sources and texts of Mari, Ugarit and Ebla. Outwardly, Dagon resembles the hero of Oannes, who, according to the Sumerians, is described as a creature with a human head and a fish body. Dagon is the “food-giver”, the god of agriculture, fish farming, rain, fertility. Myths say that he invented the plow, taught the first people to sow grain and bake bread. In the Bible, Dagon is associated, according to folk etymology, with the Hebrew word dag (fish) and is described as a half-human half-fish. In The Cthulhu Myths, Dagon is a fantastic god of fish and the leader of amphibian humanoids.
The Bible (1 Samuel 5-6) has a story that mentions the god Dagon. The Philistines defeated the Israelites, who were God’s people at that time, and took the Ark of the Covenant. They brought this shrine to the temple of Dagon and placed near Dagon. When the Philistines entered the temple the next morning, they saw that Dagon lay with his face to the ground in front of the Ark of the Covenant. They lifted Dagon and again put in place. The next morning, they saw that Dagon lay again in front of the Ark of the Covenant. In this case, the head, arms and legs of Dagon were cut off from the body. At the same time, God began to strike at the Philistines. In their cities, mice and rats multiplied. Painful growths appeared on the bodies of the Philistines. The Philistines smuggled the Ark of the Covenant from city to city, seeking to get rid of God’s punishments. But each time, God began to punish the new city of the Philistines. These disasters continued until they sent the Ark of the Covenant back to the Israelites.
