Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu has voiced his harsh criticism of the European Union (EU) and NATO. In a podcast with American blogger and journalist Alex Jones on X, Georgescu accused the EU of trying to open a new front against Russia through Romania, which could potentially lead to a third world war. He also highlighted the control EU countries have over key figures such as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and denounced the lack of real leadership in today's world.
For Calin Georgescu, the Mihail Cogalniceanu military base in Romania, which is being expanded to become NATO's largest in Europe, is a potential springboard for an offensive against Russia.
Romania at the heart of geopolitical tensions
Calin Georgescu also pointed the finger at the Romanian authorities, calling them “puppets” manipulated by foreign powers. According to him, these puppets are seeking to precipitate a conflict before Donald Trump’s inauguration, scheduled for January 20. He contrasted the hawkish stance of NATO’s European wing with that of Trump, whom he describes as a supporter of peace. This division within NATO is, according to him, a crucial factor in the current dynamics of international relations.
The Mihail Cogalniceanu military base: a point of tension
During a interview with shawn ryan, American screenwriter and television producer Calin Georgescu addressed the issue of the Mihail Cogalniceanu military base in Romania. This base, which is being expanded to become the largest NATO base in Europe, is seen as a potential springboard for an offensive against Russia. Calin Georgescu expressed his opposition to this prospect, saying that Romania should not be involved in a conflict that does not directly concern it.
A controversial expansion project
The expansion of the Mihail Cogalniceanu airbase, which began in March 2024, is a colossal project estimated at 2,5 billion euros. The expansion aims to accommodate up to 10 military personnel and their families, thus strengthening NATO's presence in the region. Calin Georgescu expressed his concerns about the use of this base as a starting point for offensive operations, a prospect he considers unacceptable for Romania.
A presidential election marked by controversy
On November 24, 2024, Calin Georgescu surprised everyone by winning the first round of the Romanian presidential elections with 22,94% of the vote.
